I take this rare trip back

on a road so long and winding

that leads me

to this dry harbor

Once awash with a young man’s dreams

Now left a landscape

parched and barren

Exposing life’s cracks and fissures

Docks that moored

youthful hopes and desires

now lay rotted and abandoned

along this deserted shore

So I wander along the broken planks

and ponder that time that was(n’t)

Stop and gaze into the far horizon

With this gesture – as I do so avow….

Delene, I loved you

Though the many years have passed

In my mind’s eye

I still see you there

Blue jeans and brown bucks

A way that you moved

So angelic

I fell right under your spell

Sequins on black tee’s

Transforming mere daylight

into sparkling diamonds

that glittered upon your breast

Coal dark eyes

did contrast

the sunlight strands

that haloed your round and radiant face

You were my youth

A secret desire

An anchor of hope

in a world of shifting currents

Others, they were anointed

Bestowed a grace and honor

of your brilliant smile

your magic touch

Is it some irrational conviction

or a want for resolution

that leads me

to this dry harbor

Once awash with a young man’s dreams

now left a never fading memory

of a girl far in the distance

but remains an endless aspiration

That is YOU
